Geno Auriemma | DON’T GIVE THEM A CHOICE

Geno Auriemma is one of the most winningest coaches in the history of college basketball. He sat down with Brett Ledbetter and What Drives Winning to talk about how it's our job as coaches to push our athletes.

He said we have to push them because “It’s not in everybody’s nature to get up every morning and work. That’s why we need other people.”

He then said, “You don’t give them a choice because if you give them a choice, they will take the easy one, and the exceptional kid will take the hard one.”

When he was visiting the Naval Academy, he learned, “Don’t do the easy wrong; do the hard right?” But he asked, “Who does that? The exceptional people? The average guy needs somebody behind them.”

Coach K | GET ON THE RIGHT BUS

Michael William Krzyzewski, nicknamed "Coach K", is an American former college basketball coach. He served as the head coach at Duke University from 1980 to 2022, during which he led the Blue Devils to five national titles, 13 Final Fours, 15 ACC tournament championships, and 13 ACC regular season titles.

He said the best advice he ever got was when he was 14. The night before his first day in high school, his mom said, “Make sure you get on the right bus; – the bus you are going to drive for the rest of your life. Only put good people on your bus, and only get on a bus that is driven by a good person. You will never accomplish what you want by doing it alone – you will accomplish a heck of a lot more by doing it with great people.

He said he gets up and works out every morning at 7 before his family wakes up. They have no idea what he is really doing to earn the money, house, and cars he has. He handles his business every day so when adversity hits, it doesn’t all fall down because of the work he puts in.
