Becky Burleigh is the former soccer coach for the University of Florida and a co-founder of What Drives Winning.
In the video below, she talks about the difference between what matters most to us, and what matters most to society, and how we need to fight to keep the main thing the main thing.
She starts by saying to draw 4 quadrants. In the top left quadrant, write down the answer to the following two questions in the top two boxes:
1 - What do you sacrifice to pursue greatness?
2 - Why do you sacrifice so much?
This is a cost-benefit analysis. The first question is the cost and the second is the benefit.
On the bottom two, answer the following questions:
3 - How does society measure your success?
4 - What’s important to you about life in general?
When you look at the bottom two lists, is there a lot in common? For most people, there isn’t. On the right (2nd and 4th questions), it shows, why you sacrifice so much and how society measures success, and there are often a lot of common answers that show how easy it is to be pulled into society’s scorecard, even if you don’t want to.
When you look at the left, you see what you sacrifice and what is important. Too often we sacrifice what is most important to us, ao that is what we have to fight for.
