“Energy, not time, is our fundamental currency of high-performance.” - Tony Schwartz

In their book, The Power of Full Engagement, authors Tony Schwartz and Dr. Jim Loehr argue that energy is the true currency of high performance, not time.

They say the power of performing at your best comes from managing your four energy buckets: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.

We all have the same 24 hours in a day, so how we choose to spend that time is most important.

Physical Energy Bucket: When our physical bucket is full, we have the energy we need to do what we want and need to do. To fill this bucket, we need to make sure we are getting the right amount of exercise and rest, and that we are putting good things in our body.

Emotional Energy Bucket: Our emotional bucket determines the quality of energy that we have. Our bucket is full when our energy is positive, and it is empty when it is negative. Every day, do things that make you feel good and positive.

Mental Energy Bucket: Our mental bucket determines how focused we are on the tasks we need to complete. When it is full, we are able to stay focused and engaged.

Spiritual Energy Bucket: Our spiritual bucket determines how connected we are to our purpose and values. When we are doing work that is aligned to our purpose and value, our bucket is full and we are at our best.

When you are pursuing your goals, it is important to bring the best energy to your most important work. Know what fills each bucket and what empties them for you.

Question of the Day: What fills your buckets, and what empties them?
