Have you ever felt like you were working hard and giving something your all, but you never got the break or breakthrough you felt you deserved?
This is how Simon Peter and his brother Andrew, Jesus’s first disciples, must have felt the day they met Jesus.
Before following Jesus, Peter and Andrew were fishermen from Galilee. The day they met Jesus, they had spent all night fishing but had caught nothing.
They were tired and frustrated when Jesus got into their boat and told Peter to pull out into the deep water and put their nets down for a catch.
Tired and exhausted, Peter said, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word, I will let down the nets.”
Stop and Think: Have you ever felt like you fished all night but caught nothing?
They obeyed God and put their nets into the water, and they caught so many fish that their nets started to break and their boat began to sink.
Amazed, Peter fell to his knees in front of Jesus and said. “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”
Jesus then said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
When we try to do things on our own, we might find success, but it won’t compare to the success that we will have if we do it with God.
Psalms 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
If we can seek God first and take pleasure in doing so by reading the Bible and praying, God will give us the desires of our hearts. Preacher Joyce Meyer says, “Seek the Lord and let God give me the stuff.”
What you want might not come immediately, but in Matthew 7:7, Jesus says, “Ask and keep on asking and it will be given to you; seek and keep on seeking and you will find; knock and keep on knocking and the door will be opened to you.”
Peter followed Jesus to the end, and he is often associated with the rock upon which Jesus built His church, symbolizing his foundational role in the Christian faith.
If you keep working hard, keep seeking God, and don’t quit, your breakthrough will come and you never know how your journey might impact the world.
SOMETHING(s) TO THINK ABOUT
1 - What is your biggest takeaway?
2 - What is one area in which you want to have a breakthrough, but nothing is happening yet?
3 - What are you currently doing or need to do to make the breakthrough a reality?
4 - How can you seek and pursue God in your journey? What areas do you need to go deeper?
My Prayer
My God. Thank you for the blessings you have given me. I am ready for a breakthrough. Please show me the things I need to do to make this happen, and please give me the strength and discipline to do the things I need to do while continuing to seek you first in everything I do. In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen.
