"A champion is defined not by their wins but by how they recover when they fall. You have to believe in yourself when no one else does." - Serena Williams
How do you overcome a lack of confidence?
Serena Williams is widely regarded as one of the best tennis players of all time. She is known for her strong serve, her powerful groundstrokes, and her unmatched competitive spirit, but despite all her success, Serena says she still got nervous before matches. In fact, Serena says she probably went into more tournaments feeling low confidence than she did feeling high confidence.
How did she cope with it? Serena says she did three things: Kept it to herself, used positive affirmations, and took things one step at a time.
Nervousness and fear before big moments are normal, and she normalized it by keeping it to herself and not making it bigger than what it had to be.
When you get stable and in a space where you can manage your emotions, you can start talking to yourself in a positive way. Saying things like, “I can do this,” or, “I worked hard for this moment,” can help reframe or reprogram your mind. Don’t let negative thoughts hold you back; learn to control them.
Then, just do the next, right thing. Make the next, right play. Do one good thing and watch it build upon itself. Every time you do something positive, say something positive to yourself and keep stacking and building.
Confidence comes from the success you get when you put in the work. Work hard then go perform and watch your confidence grow with your success.
Question of the Day: When you have a lack of confidence, how do you overcome it?
