Muhammad Ali: Suffer Now, Win Later

“I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.’” - Muhammad Ali

When I was in college, we had to run timed miles, and I hated it. I’m short and my legs aren’t long, so I would have to watch some of my teammates gracefully glide across the track with ease while I had to push myself and fight to make my times.

But then we got to the end of the season, and in close, tough games, the other team would be tired and I felt stronger as the game went on.

It taught me an important lesson: Do what others won’t today so you can do what others can’t tomorrow.

Even though I hated running miles, I pushed myself, and the benefits came months later when I needed it most.

Muhammad Ali is one of the greatest boxers of all time. He once said, “I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.’”

That’s the key to success and greatness: We sometimes have to do things we hate to get to the things we love.

So don’t quit when it gets hard. Keep pushing and get through it all so you can be who you want to be and live how you want to live.

Reflection Questions: What is something you hate doing but know you have to do because it will make you better, stronger, or get you closer to your dreams?
