Mamba Monday | EXCELLENCE TRANSLATES

Updated: Jan 24, 2023

NCAA football coaching legend Nick Saban, and NBA legend Kobe Bryant sat down to talk about excellence:

KOBE BRYANT: EXCELLENCE TRANSLATES

“Excellence translates. Once you learn what excellence looks like, you can translate that to any field. Once you have what excellence and attention to detail look like, you have a foundation that you can build anything on top of.”

THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE IS FUN

Nick Saban: “We [Alabama football] are oriented to helping people make the choices and decisions to be successful, and they say, ‘Well if you go there, you won’t have any fun.’ Kobe: “That is such an average thing to say.” Nick Saban: “The fun of it is knowing you did your best to do something very well.”

BEING EXCELLENT IS FUN

Kobe says that being excellent is fun. One of his good friends is Nadia Comanci. She was a 5-time Olympic gold medal gymnast. He asked her about her childhood. She said she learned how to be the best in the world, and she traveled the world and saw some of the most amazing places while her friends were being children, hanging out at the mall and shopping. She said, “What’s fun about that? I’m the best in the world. That’s fun to me.”

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR SATISFACTION FROM? Saban said, “Where do you get your self-gratification from?” Do you really love the game, and do you love doing the things you need to do to be the best, or do you just want to get some feedback on Twitter about what you did or about what somebody else thinks about you? I think that’s not really good for developing self.”
