Kerri Strug: Push Yourself

“It's important to push yourself further than you think you can go each and every day - as that is what separates the good from the great.” - Kerri Strug

To be great in any field, you will at some point have to challenge or push yourself past your perceived limits or comfort zone and into a new space.

This extra effort separates the good from the great.

Kerri Strug was a member of the Magnificent Seven US Olympic gymnastics team member who won the first-ever gold medal for the United States in the women’s team competition at the 1996 Summer Olympics.

Strug famously performed the vault that clinched the gold for the US on an injured ankle. With the gold medal on the line, Strug had two vaults to clinch a victory for her team and country. On her first jump, Strug landed badly on her ankle, later learning that she had a third-degree lateral sprain and tendon damage, but instead of quitting, she pushed past her pain and successfully landed her second jump before collapsing to her knees.

Because of her grit and toughness, Strug became a national sports hero, visiting President Bill Clinton, appearing at various television talk shows, and making the cover of magazines like Sports Illustrated.

Strug later said, “It's important to push yourself further than you think you can go each and every day - as that is what separates the good from the great.”

Strug pushed herself beyond her limits to make the team, and when the time came for her to push herself to complete the final vault, she did so, creating a legacy that would last forever.

Questions of the Day: When it’s time to push yourself out of your comfort zone and past your limits, will you?
