Kenny Smith | Do the Ordinary Things Extra

Did you know you can change your life in just 6 months?

That is what NBA champion Kenny Smith did in high school. In May of his junior year, he said he didn’t have a single college scholarship offer, but by the end of his senior year, he could go play basketball for any school in the country.

What changed?

His habits.

At the end of his junior year, Kenny’s high school coach asked him what he wanted to do after high school. When Kenny told him he wanted to play in the NBA, his coach said, “I didn’t know that because you don’t work hard enough.”

That conversation inspired Kenny to start working harder, and he said that summer, he just did the ordinary things extra. He would do simple things like running up the stairs, instead of taking the elevator, and all the ordinary things that he did extra added up to going from having no scholarships as a junior to becoming a first-team all-American, McDonald’s All-American, and the ability to go to any school in the country as a senior all because he changed his work ethic and did the ordinary things extra.

Everything is right there for you if you are willing to either change the direction or how you are doing what you are doing.

SOMETHING(s) TO THINK ABOUT

1 - What is your biggest takeaway from Kenny’s story?2 - If you looked up in 6 months and said, “This has been the best 6 months of my life,” what are you doing, who are you doing it with, and how do you feel?”

3 - What is one thing you can do every day to make this happen?

4 - What is one thing keeping you from making this happen?
