Do you have an athlete who doesn’t like watching film? In an interview with Gilbert Arenas on the Gil's Arena podcast, NBA All-star Isaiah Thomas said one of the most important things he learned from Kobe Bryant was how to watch film for himself and how to watch film to better lead others.
You can watch him talk about it at the 40:12 mark of the interview in the video below:
Despite being only 5’9, Isaiah Thomas was an all-star and one of the best players in the world when he was with the Boston Celtics. But to go deeper in the playoffs, IT needed the help of his teammates.
Kobe told IT, “To get the guys that aren’t as good as you to follow you, you have to teach them the way. You have to be a killer to be great, but you have to help the people you lead to get them to where you are mentally and to believe that they are just like you.”
Kobe said you have to sit down and watch film with them. Their mind has to get to where yours is by watching film with him.
IT then said he used to just watch film trying to figure out how he could score better, but then Kobe would send him videos of guys setting back picks. IT said that made his game so much easier and it opened his entire game because he didn’t need to waste energy anymore.
