In an interview at the University of Southern California, Kobe Bryant was asked, “How do you inspire and foster that vision of greatness in a child - a mentality that is very different than what they see every day on social media?”
Kobe said, “I try to get my kids to see the beauty in the process. The important thing we can do as parents is lead by example but also encourage our kids to think incrementally.”
He told a story about how his daughter Gianna told him she wanted to play basketball and be better than him. He said they started with 15 minutes a day and started shooting under the rim. Each month, they would take a step back.
He ended by saying, “Through actionable things is how we teach our children. They aren’t listening to what we say, but through sports, we can teach them to think incrementally, and if it can become a part of their process in sports, it can become a part of their process in life.”
