Frank Tchuisi: How Do You Want to Show Up

“Be more concerned with your character than your reputation because your character is what you really are.” - John Wooden

Frank Tchuisi played basketball for the Villanova Wildcats under Hall-of-Fame Coach Jay Wright. Coach Wright said they originally didn’t want to recruit Tchuisi because they didn’t think he was good enough to play at their level, but they gave him a scholarship because of his character, energy, and attitude.

Although Tchuisi didn’t play much, when they got to cut the nets down after a big win that put them into the Final Four, Tchuisi got the chance to cut the final piece off the net and hold it up for everyone to see because of how he showed up every day and the energy and enthusiasm he brought.

When my kids go to camps, clinics, and tournaments, I always tell them the same thing:

Everyone always notices the biggest athlete, the fastest athlete, and the best player. They are easy to spot, and you can’t really control those things. But people also notice the person who works the hardest and the person who brings the most joy. Coaches want to coach those people, and teammates want to play with them. You can always be that person—the person who works the hardest and brings positive energy, enthusiasm, and joy.

You can be seen and make a name for yourself by how you show up and the energy, enthusiasm, and joy that you bring.

Good people want to be around good people, and there are valuable spots on every team for people who do things the right way with the right energy.

Questions of the Day: How do you want to show up? What do you want people to say about you?
