“Our stories represent our version of reality, and ultimately become our destiny.” - Dr. Jim Loehr

Dr. Jim Loehr is a performance psychologist who has worked with some of the best athletes in the world. He says, “One of the most important dynamics of human performance is the story we tell ourselves. More important than what happens to you is the story you tell around what happens to you, before, during, and after the occurrence.”

He also says, “Our stories represent our version of reality, and ultimately become our destiny.”

We have the ability to learn how to change our story and our inner voice. To do so, we have to do three things:

1 - Truth: It has to be grounded in some truth.

2 - Direction: It takes you where you want to go.

3 - Purpose: Get the purpose right behind why we do what we do.

Your inner voice can be, “I can’t control my inner voice, so I will continue to be negative because trying to change is pointless,” or, “I can learn how to better manage my inner voice, and when I do so, it will change my life, so it is one of the most important things I can and will do.”

Dr. Loehr has helped 1,000s of athletes change their inner stories. He says the most powerful way to do so is to have them write it down about every two weeks. Write down who you are and who you want to be, and eventually you will rewire your brain to tell a different, more effective story.

Question of the Day: What is the story in your head right now, and what do you want it to be?
