Dean Smith | How Do You Want to Be Remembered?
Every new season, “How do you want to be remembered?” is a question that all coaches should ask themselves.
In the video below, Michael Jordan said his college coach, Dean Smith, was a second father to him. Jordan said, “My parents basically turned me over to him [Coach Smith] and he took me through the basics, teaching me how to understand more about people, be respectful, and be appreciative of things that were given to me.
From that day forward, I’ve carried that with me.”
Roy Williams said Coach Smith was better off the court and he did things for people without them even knowing about it.

2 - What do you hope your athletes say about you years after you coach them?
3 - Why would a parent trust you with their athletes?
Daniel Coyle | Culture Adds to Performance
Take some time to think about the most connected team that you have ever been on. It can be a team from school or sports. It can be a family group or a group at work. Think about that FEELING. What does it feel like to be on a team that is cooperative, cohesive, and connected?
What’s that worth? How does that add to performance? How much does that add to performance?
Good groups are more than the sum of their parts. How much more?
A team at Harvard looked at 10 groups that were all the same except for the culture of two groups - one had a strong culture, and the other had a weak culture. The difference in performance was 756% net revenue over 10 years.
Culture is performance. Culture makes groups add up to the sum of their parts.

3 - How much do you think a strong culture is worth?
Mike Tomlin | What Are You Willing to Do?
Mike Tomlin told a group of kids that how fast you run, how high you jump, and how strong you are doesn’t matter.
He then said, “It’s not what you’re capable of, it's what you are willing to do. I know plenty of people who are capable but fewer who are willing. Will is a powerful thing. Ask yourself what you are willing to do.”
Coach Tomlin said, “Whenever we watched TV and a commercial came on, we went to work. We did push-ups and sit-ups.
He told them he wanted to come back a year later and see how many people established that habit. It's easy to do once or twice, but who can do it all the time? Who can do it so much that it becomes a habit?
