Adam Saenz and Brett Ledbetter: What Do You Want to Achieve?

Updated: Jun 15, 2023

PART 1 - BRETT LEDBETTER | BE THE EXAMPLE

Brett Ledbetter works with some of the best coaches and athletes in the country. In an interview with Ryan Hawk, he was asked, “What advice would you give a young professional beginning their career?

He said, “The best I’ve ever been around don’t care about their legacy. Legacy is for the ego.”

He then said he did an exercise with a team where they asked the team, “What is the best thing you’ve learned from your coach?” They all said, “How to be a good husband and how to be a good father.”

The coach said he has had zero conversations about being a husband or a father.

Brett said, “The lessons you are teaching them are caught more with their eyes and less with their ears. The best thing you can give to someone else is a strong example. Focus on growing your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health as you are pursuing excellence. That stands out.”

As you begin a new season and year, take some time to think about who you want to be and how you want your athletes and their families to think about you, and what you hope they say about you.

SOMETHING(s) TO THINK ABOUT

1 - What do you want them to see and say when people see you and talk about you?

2 - How close do your words and actions match your hopes and goals?

3 - What is one area you need to work on: physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually?

PART 2 - ADAM SAENZ | PUTTING IT INTO ACTION

Adam Saenz is a licensed psychologist who has worked in schools and has his own private practice. He said the key to living a good, happy life is effective decision-making, but before you can do that, you have to have a goal and know what a good life looks like for you.

He said there are three questions you can or should ask yourself:

1 - What do you want to achieve?

2 - How do you want to be remembered?

3 - How can you make yourself sustainable?

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE? This is a simple, straightforward question. In anything I do, whether it's coaching a team, going into a team meeting, or doing conflict resolution, I ask everyone involved, "What do you want to achieve?" or, "What do you hope we get out of this?"

- When I'm meeting with a parent or an athlete, I might ask, "What do you hope to get out of this experience?" Some want to be the best athletes, while others just want to have a fun experience playing with their friends.

- When I meet a new coach for the first time and ask about a team meeting, I'll ask, "What do you hope comes out of this meeting?"

- When I am leading a conflict resolution meeting, I'll always ask all parties separately, "What do you hope to get out of this meeting?"

HOW DO YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED? This question forces you to go a little deeper. There is a saying that goes, "People don't always remember what you did, but they remember how you made them feel." What do you want people to say about you when you aren't around, or at the end of this season, or 5 or 10 years from now?

HOW CAN YOU MAKE YOURSELF SUSTAINABLE?

You can't impact others if you aren't around. Making sure you are doing everything you can from a health and performance standpoint impacts your sustainability. Are you making good choices for your physical and mental health? Are you someone who people will want to keep or take with them? Finding ways to stick is essential.

THE BIG 3

He then said you can see your success and health through three lenses:

1 - A Healthy Body - A body that is strong, fit, and moves freely.

2 - A Clear Mind - A mind that only accepts positive thoughts that lead to effective decision-making.

3 - A Clean Heart - A heart that is full of love and free from hate and negativity.

If you have those three things, you can make good choices and you can execute them. If anyone of them is off, your decision-making will be off too.

A happy, healthy, and successful life and career starts with planning with the end in mind. Who do you want to be? What do you want to achieve? How do you want to be remembered? How can you make yourself sustainable?

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

1 - Who do you want to be?

2 - What do you want to achieve?

3 - How do you want to be remembered?

4 - How can you make yourself sustainable?
